A Guide to Searching for a Hospice or Palliative Care Service

A Guide to searching for Hospice or Palliative Care Services

How to Search for Hospice & Palliative Care Services in the UK

  1. If you know the name of the service. Use the - Name - field. If you are not sure of the full name you can enter part of the name e.g. Christopher (For St Christopher's Hospice)
  2. For most effective search of a geographical location use the first field - Areas covered by service - since this will list many of the areas the service covers. This list is not exhaustive and is being gradually expanded to cover as many areas as possible.
  3. The - Town/City - field will only indicate where the service is located e.g. The Peace Hospice - Watford - the service may be cover a much wider area - use the - Areas covered by service - field.
  4. The - Region/country - field allows you to list services in a particular geographical region or country in the UK.
  5. If you are unable to locate a particular town or borough look for the nearest main town or borough, in most cases the hospice or palliative care provider will cover your area. e.g. St Christopher's Hospice covers South east London but we do not list all of the boroughs in south east London.
  6. If you are searching for a service on behalf of someone and are unfamiliar with the area, try clicking the maps on the 'find a hospice / palliative care service' page and click again to view the full local map. Click here
  7. If you are still unsure of the location of the town or borough try www.multimap.co.uk where you can locate the exact area and find the other major towns around it.

Narrowing the search

A search can be narrowed to look specifically for an NHS or Voluntary hospice or palliative care service and the type of service provided.

  1. The - Type of hospice - field is broken down into Adults, Children and HIV/AIDs. It does not just cover hospices but all palliative care services.
  2. The - Type of service - field allows you to look for an Inpatient unit (a service with beds), Home Care Service, Hospice at Home Service, Daycare Service or Hospital Based Service. Hospice at Home allows a multi-disciplinary team to provide a longer period of care in the home and will usually include a clinical nurse specialist. This field can be combined with the three following fields - Inpatient management, Homecare Management and Daycare Management.
Please note there may be a Sue Ryder or Marie Curie Hospice which will not appear under Voluntary management so please check using the Marie Curie or Sue Ryder management category for possible Marie Curie or Sue Ryder Services.
