Twinning

A twinning link is a formal or informal agreement between two communities or
organisations to work together to develop friendship links, exchange experiences,
knowledge and skills and develop mutual understanding, tolerance and respect. The
idea of twinning originated after World War One and increased dramatically after World
War Two with the need for countries to work towards peace and reconciliation.
In the context of the hospice movement, several successful twinning arrangements have
been set up between UK and overseas hospices (and undoubtedly between other
countries too.) An informal survey conducted by hospice information in 1994 identified
the following types of practical supported offered by 'Hospice twins':
- staff exchanges
- volunteer exchanges
- work experience
- teaching
- funding
- drugs
- equipment
- vehicles
- management
- information on education and training
- sponsorship for training
- encouraging local Rotary Club to link with overseas counterpart
- exchanging:
- correspondence
- literature: journals, photocopies of articles, research news
- fundraising ideas and activities
- newsletters and photographs
